My Hometown

I submitted these images this week to Tennessee Magazine for one of their periodic contests entitled "My Hometown". This magazine is published monthly by the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association and distributed free to all served by member coops. Ours is Chickasaw Electric, an amazingly fine group who, just this morning, once again restored power after another violent, prolonged thunderstorm kicked us out of bed at 3:30am - still going, as a matter of fact.

As with other contests I've entered, my intent is not to win but to showcase something special, as I did last year and, quite incidentally, received several prizes. With these, it is to try to bring attention to little (pop. ~1500) Rossville that can't really compete with so many of the quaint, beautiful towns in Tennessee. I had to do something to make these stand out a little, since we don't have any great beauty or interest, hence the "antiquing".

The heart of "downtown" Rossville - Wolf River Cafe. Meat and three, all fried, grease changed every pandemic. Greet old friends, make new ones. Keep your politics to yourself.

On a Sunday morning sidewalk, 6:30am.  A seven shot pano of "downtown" Rossville. That's all we've got, folks. Rumor has it we're getting a restaurant, deli and a liquor store soon (maybe) just on the edge of town...we'll see. But in any case, right now,  it's "My Hometown"

  1. Congrats on your win, John! The "antiquing" is well done! i have seen photos where they interpose old photo onto new photo of the same road where shops has disappeared or new road, etc. Maybe you can do that?

    1. Thanks Nancy! These haven't won anything yet - they will announce in September. Last year's winners were in a contest for a local historical society and library. I know what you mean with the old/new idea. I wanted all of these to show the town name because we have nothing else as a landmark or identifying structure.

  3. Sooooo Americana. Your edit really makes one feel nostalgic when looking at the area. Aunt Bea and Oppie will be stepping out pretty soon. Is there a fishing hole near by for Andy? All joking aside very nice representation of some of the smaller towns around the country. Hope you win on this set as well.

    1. Thanks! That would be Maggie and Bubba, they works at the Cafe, ya' know? There is, in fact a rather large fishing hole about 200 yards away - The Wolf River! I was hoping for that "small town feel" (certainly not Jason Aldean's) because there are so many electric coop communities that have a lot of character and charm, or historic elements. In any case, I just wanted people to see little old Rossville.
