The Memorial to 'the fifty'. If you have ever watched The Great Escape or know your history any way you will be aware that 50 prisoners that escaped from Stalag Luft III in WWII were executed. This is a memorial erected in the woods near to the camp in 1945 to those 50. It was quite moving to visit.
One of my favorite movies with Steve McQueen, falls inline with The Shawshank Redemption (which I have watched 5 times). I didn't know a memorial had been erected. Thanks for sharing and this is exactly why I enjoy our group....learning about what is out there 😊
ReplyDeleteSuch a moving place, Good history Love the movie great capture
ReplyDeleteThank you Peter - quite a fine memorial, image and remembrance. One of the survivors of that camp lived in my hometown. He was a very quiet, reserved man, a member of our church, and I wouldn't have known about him until we saw the movie and my dad, a surgeon in WWII, mentioned his name and exploits. Dad told me that he didn't want anyone to know about his story. Very common back then - I knew three older Jewish families, one living next door, who were concentration camp survivors. I caught a brief glance of the tattoos on the forearms.
ReplyDeleteAs you say, keeping quiet does seem to be common. Understandable I guess as many had traumatic times. A surgeon in WWII? Probably quite an experience in itself.
ReplyDeleteHe was fairly closed about his experiences, as well, except when we were in the ER or OR. I spent a lot of time there with him as a teenager, and he would describe the difficulties of doing some of his surgeries in field hospitals. He was an orthopedic surgeon, but had to do almost anything in theater - it was actually his residency, he was so green. Quite a traumatic introduction to your chosen profession.
ReplyDeleteYour line line - wow, you can say that again!!
