RAIL USA! My Amtrak Adventure

Don’t ask me why trains are my favourite means of transportation. It is simply magic and it has always been so. No wonder as a child I dreamt of crossing America by rail. My dream came true last October when I bought myself an Amtrak Rail Pass and flew to the USA, first time as a tourist, not for business. I planned a three-week trip. I stayed two months and I hope to come back for more train adventure soon.

Here is the first part of my Amtrak travelog: a trip from Chicago to Seattle on the Empire Builder. https://piotr.exposure.co/rail-usa-the-empire-builder

  1. What a great trip! So glad you got to experience the Great Northern Plains this way. I lived in southwest Wyoming for 10 years and it is quite different from what you saw. That's the amazing thing about the US - the vastness and diversity of the land and people. I do enjoy you travelogues to see how you view all of these places in this marvelous world!

  2. Piotr everytime I see one of your "Great U.S. Train" posts I have to look at each and everyone of your photos. And everytime I see numerous photos I had not seen before. You have seriously captured the best photos of "America" in this trip and I hope that you decide to make a book with all these photos. Your view of "our world" be it here in the US or Africa or...... is beyond description and one that I personally love to look at (through your photos) time after time . You have a talent for capturing " Real Life" 😉

    1. Hi Camellia! I just love it: travelling and meeting people. Maybe that is why I tend to avoid safaris and tourist attractions that look nicer on Instagram than in reality. I am on my way from Switzerland home now, new boss at work as of tomorrow, so will need extra time to write about my trip on Coast Starlight, from Seattle to SF. Will do my best to post it within the next two weeks.

Piotr I Love trains, I call them choo choos From when I was a little kid playing with trains in the basement and listened to my grandpa talking about railroads and one of the biggest memories riding on a steam train from Boise Idaho to Salt Lake City Utah before it was retried Trains are cool. What an experience you just had riding the rails from Chicago to Seattle What an adventure and journey Loved all the captures and story line Really enjoyed it thanks for sharing I guess I can say they fascinate me because they are a far differnt form of travel and they are all unique in their own way

    1. Hi Jovi, Hi Tom, I was in love with trains since I remember. Together with my brother, we played a lot with model trains and always went on vacation by train (car was soooo boring). Trains are our staple diet in Europe, they take us to almost every village. However, rail in the USA is a legend, the grand lines covering long distances could only be compared to the ones in Russia, now off limits to us. I do hope to come back to the States for more Amtrak adventure. Will definitely do the Empire Builder once again. Meanwhile, I will write about my Coast Starlight experience.

  4. Wow, Piotr, I enjoyed your post so much. The pictures are great, and the stories are fun. You seem to have a gift for making friends with strangers. As Camellia said, your pictures and stories would make a wonderful book. I've subscribed to your mailing list.

    1. Hi Tom, thank you very much. I just loved it in the USA. Travelled there many times but only for short business trips. No wonder last year, I extended my three-week Amtrak trip to almost two months. For sure, I will come back for more train travel and meeting strangers. Americans are incredibly sociable and easy going, far cry from introvert Europeans. In fact, I am writing these words on a train from Switzerland to Germany. 150 miles per hour in silence. I would not dare to strike up a conversation with a European I do not know here unless it is ordering coffee in a café car.
