Ramble through Hintonburg-2

As promised, here is the second post on Hintonburg.  Just to refresh your memory:

"Hintonburg is a neighbourhood in Kitchissippi Ward in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, located west of the Downtown core. It is a historically working-class, predominantly residential neighbourhood, with a commercial strip located along Wellington Street West. It is home to the Parkdale Farmer's Market, located along Parkdale Avenue, just north of Wellington. It is considered to be one of Ottawa's most "hipster" neighbourhoods." - Wikipedia

Saturday was a fun ramble through an area of the city that I do not know very well.  The RA Photoclub ran an outing as a joint venture with the Urban group and the Still Life group which they called Found Still Life.  A fun outing and a great pub lunch, who could want more?

This porch gives a hint of life in the old Hintonburg before modernity.

Lots of fire escapes in the area

Lots of wall art...

The church had a big presence in the original village of Hintonburg.  The Virgin is looking down towards St-François d'Assise from her place in front of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary.  Interestingly she stands in front of a building that originally temporarily housed children who were shipped out from the UK to work on farms as indentured workers, essentially unsupervised slaves.  The practice started in the late Victorian era and was not discontinued until the 1930s.

  1. Great commentary, especially the end...giving a good perspective, both written and photographed, of the area. I love the second mural, somewhat gives the notion that life, even with the boarded windows and rust, still goes on and it's not so drab.
