The town square in my town, Franklin, Tennessee, features a monument to a Confederate soldier that was erected in 1899.  The town has had mixed feelings about that statue for a long while, and in 2021 a second monument was added to memorialize Union soldiers.  They chose a soldier from the USCT -- U.S. Colored Troops.  The USCT was composed of men who had previously been enslaved, and who joined the fight against the Confederacy when they were freed.  The new statue stands in front of the courthouse, facing the Confederate monument.
