    1. Thanks, John. When water floods Venice, the views are incredible. There is also something very sad about it. We are losing one of the most important world heritage sites. Saint Mark Square is less than one meter above the sea level…

    2. Sad, indeed - I also understand that they are limiting the number of tourists to reduce the strain on the infrastructure.

    4. Sorry, John, deleted the comment above because of mistakes 😀.

Venice would be totally overrun by tourists if not for its location on the islands. Water buses start bringing day trippers at around 10 am. The crowds disappear around 5-6 pm and the town with its wonders is all to yourself. To control the number of day visitors, special fees and higher taxes were introduced. Prohibitive hotel rates keep most of the crowds away as well.

This is a problem of many tourist places in Europe. One would be ill advised to visit Prague, Cracow, the Baltic Sea beaches or Dubrovnik in July/August. Millions are there as they follow Tik-Tok influencers who tell them where to make selfies. Fortunately, they are the least inventive people in the world, so the most beautiful places in Europe are just for you to enjoy.

  2. I've sat in that square with water up to my ankle. Your photo is a beautiful capture of a sad happening.

    1. In San Marco, the water was not really pouring directly from the lagoon. You could see little “streams” flowing from the gaps in pavement slabs.

    1. Water from the lagoon will likely take Venice one day. However, I saw how they work on protecting the buildings. There is even a project to partially close the lagoon, similar to Delta Project in the south of The Netherlands.
