Known as a "clearing ball" or sometimes referred to in historical contexts as a "Hungry Horse ball it was used for logging for example Knocking Down Trees: The ball was attached to a heavy steel cable and dragged between two large tractors or bulldozers. As the tractors moved forward through a forest, the cable caught on the trees, and the weight of the ball provided extreme leverage to pull or knock them down efficiently.
