Fingernail Shells Built, found, painted

I found these interesting but ugly shells at a beach on Staten Island. It’s pretty hilarious to pick up ocean shells in NYC. These shells can be quite long – 6 inches, and they are delicately thin. They look disturbingly like fingernails.  Google tells me they are called Atlantic razor clams, or jackknife clams.

I’ve been trying many different ways to photograph the fingernail shells. After a whole bunch of attempts, this is what I managed to do. Time to move on.

Just want to say how wonderful this group is. I really, really love seeing all your photos. So much talent, creativity, and beauty!

  1. Love those shells! Maybe try stacking them across on each other and hitting them with some side light - or not. They look great.

  2. Nancy, you fit right in here! Those are great shells. Maybe you could try an extreme closeup of one, or two together, to highight colors and textures. Also, next time you're at the beach, see if the shell on the sand makes an attractive composition with the things around it.

    1. Thanks for the encouragement. Yes, the extreme closeup I tried, as my very first effort, shows off the marvelous details. But a very long shell does not lend itself to a closeup, I found-- it was a tradeoff that lost the essence of this weirdly shaped shell.
